Friends of Lake Modewarre

The Friends of Lake Modewarre (FOLM) is a group of individuals who are committed to the ongoing health and wellbeing of Lake Modewarre, its waters and connected waterways, environs, flora and fauna, and its Aboriginal Cultural Heritage values.

The members of FOLM come from many walks of life and are connected to the lake for a variety of reasons, including:

  • living in proximity to the lake
  • interests in its flora and fauna
  • using the lake, its wetlands and environs as part of their outdoor lifestyle
  • interests in the water, its level, flow and settlement patterns
  • geospatial mapping
  • Aboriginal cultural heritage

to name but a few of the aspects of the lake that have drawn people into the group. Members of the group participate on a voluntary basis.

The FOLM commenced in mid-2020 during the period when Victoria was subject to strong societal restrictions in attempt to control the COVID-19 pandemic. A small group of people began meeting by video conferencing, learning the technology along the way. From that time, the membership of FOLM has grown to a point where the group was formalised in September 2020.

The FOLM is established under the governance and incorporation auspices of the Surf Coast and Inland Plains (Landcare) Network Inc (SCIPN). Whilst working within SCIPN’s over-arching framework, the FOLM is an independent group which sets its own principles, policies and agenda.

Currently, the FOLM is working on its vision and mission statement, and an engagement and communication strategy for its partners, stakeholders and the broader community. To this end, a Facebook page has been established to share moments in the life of the lake, and information from the group. An early imperative is also to establish a description of the area’s natural assets as a baseline for monitoring the effectiveness of its initiatives for promoting and protecting these assets into the future.

Members meet via video link (when required within COVID-19 restrictions) or in person every second Monday.

Friends of Lake Modewarre Mission

To promote and protect the value of the environmental assets of Lake Modewarre, its catchments, waters, floodplains and environs, and regenerate it into healthy connected wetlands with its native flora and fauna, by: working with the community and the relevant authorities to address the range of challenges to the environmental value of the lake; and by securing funding for this purpose.

Activities centred on achieving this mission include promoting control of pest plant and animals in the area; promoting biodiversity; and working to ensure the responsible recreational use of the Lake and surrounding area. FOLM seeks to establish a description of the area’s natural assets as a baseline for monitoring the effectiveness of these initiatives; be perceived by all levels of the community as a reliable source of information on Lake Modewarre; and increase the general community’s awareness of the lake’s local environmental issues.

The importance of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage values associated with the lake is acknowledged and will be taken into consideration at all times.

The FOLM operates under the governance and incorporation auspices of the Surf Coast and Inland Plains (Landcare) Network Incorporated (SCIPN).

Friends of Lake Modewarre Vision

To empower the community to value, preserve, restore and protect the environment of Lake Modewarre and its catchments, and to tell the story of the lake.
